Executor's fees: an executor is paid the fee set in your Will or, if none is set, up to 3.5% of the gross value of the estate plus 6% of income collected after death, under the Administration of Estates Act regulations, plus VAT where the executor is a VAT vendor. On a R2 million estate, 3.5% plus VAT comes to R80,500.

For comparison: a lawyer typically charges R1,500 to R5,000 for a basic Will, and can advise you on situations that an online Will on its own cannot; some lawyers draft a Will free if you appoint them or their trust company as executor. Free printable templates are available, and the Will kits we found for sale online in South Africa are imported UK or US editions costing R515 to R675.
