TL;DR: Update your Will after major life events (marriage, divorce, children, property changes) or at least every 1–2 years. Options: create a codicil (minor changes) or a new Will (major changes). With LegalWills.co.za, updating is simple—edit online, print, sign, witness.

Keeping your Will up to date is essential. An outdated Will can be as problematic as having no Will at all. Here’s when and how to update your Will in South Africa.

How not to change a Will

When Should You Update Your Will?

  • Marriage or divorce
  • Birth or adoption of children
  • Death of a beneficiary or executor
  • Significant change in assets or debts
  • Change in personal relationships
  • Moving to a new province or country
  • Changes in tax or succession law
  • At least every 1–2 years regardless

How Do You Update Your Will?

Option 1: Create a New Will

Recommended for significant changes. Include a revocation clause. With LegalWills.co.za, simply log in, edit, print, sign, and witness.

Option 2: Add a Codicil

For minor changes only. Must be signed and witnessed like the original Will.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I update my Will?

Every 1–2 years, and immediately after any major life event.

Do I need a new Will after divorce?

Yes. While South African law automatically revokes provisions in favour of a divorced spouse after 3 months, creating a new Will is strongly recommended.
